The juggernaut continues to steamroll on. World of Warcraft, the biggest MMORPG to have ever been unleashed on video gamers, seems to only be gaining steam with every expansion. You can see the evidence of this in its numbers sold. In 2008, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King sold 2.8 million copies in a single day, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm sold 3.3 million copies in its first day of release.
“We had to bring Azeroth to the brink of destruction in Cataclysm, but the result was our best expansion yet,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, in a press release. “We want to thank all of our new, existing, and returning players throughout the world for their incredible enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to hearing what they think about all the new content.”
Blizzard is enormous, but even they’re not immune to burnout. There’s something in WoW for everyone, but not for me. Not anymore. I rolled a human warrior in vanilla WoW, roaming Elwynn Forest and slaying wolves, and I ended the game in the halls of the Lich King, casting healing spells with my blood elf paladin. I’m done; raiding burned me out and I’m not coming back.
