It started as a routine traffic cop for Officer Jonathan Seiter. He’d pulled over 64-year-old Otto Coleman and was prepared to write him a ticket when Coleman jumped out of the car and attacked the cop. While the two scuffled, Angela Pierce and her aunt were driving by the scene and witnessed the attack. Rather than keep on driving, or call for backup, Angela Pierce jumped out of her car and went to the aid of the cop being attacked. Rather than a cop saving a woman, a woman saved a cop!
“I didn’t even think about what (the suspect) could have had, I didn’t think about what he could have done to me, I just went and tried to help,” said Pierce. “That could have been my father or grandfather. I just kept on swinging, because I didn’t want (Coleman) to get me or anything.”
After more police arrived, they initially cuffed both Coleman and Pierce. However, when Pierce and Officer Seiter explained what was going on, and how she saved the officer’s bacon, Pierce was freed from her cuffs, given a round of high-fives, and allowed to get back on the road.
Sometimes, when you see a crime being committed, you just have to help. It’s not as safe or as easy as ignoring the problem, but it’s doing the right thing. That’s not always safe or easy.
