The undefeated Wichita State Shockers. The defending national champion University of Louisville Cardinals. The Michigan Wolverines. Three of last year’s Final Four teams stood between the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the ultimate prize in college basketball. That’s a tough road to travel even before you consider the fact that the Cardinals could have easily been a number one seed. That’s on top of being the 2012 national champions themselves, and all the scrutiny that comes with playing for college basketball’s all-time winningest program while being a team full of all-star freshmen. It’s no matter. The University of Kentucky Wildcats join the UConn Huskies, Wisconsin Badgers, and Florida Gators in the NCAA Final Four.
Kentucky won a dramatic game on a long-distance three-pointer from Aaron Harrison to win the game and stave off a Michigan rally. The game, like most of Kentucky’s games during the tournament outside of Kansas State, has been a tightly-contested back-and-forth affair with leads shrinking and changing depending on who gets hot when. Fortunately, Kentucky was able to throw a bucket of cold water on Michigan before the Wolverines could fight back and force the game into overtime. All in a day’s work for the youngest team in the NCAA tournament and their beleaguered coach.
“We’re going to go back and practice, go back and see if we can get better between now and the Final Four,” said UK coach John Calipari. “These guys aren’t real happy about it, but we are.”
