Good news, everyone! Remember the whole thing about how the world is going to end in 2012? Well, Apolinario Chile Pixtun, a Mayan elder from Guatemala, is tired of the questions and is ready to put our fears to rest. According to him, the world will NOT end in 2012, so cease partying and start saving for retirement and paying your bills.
The year 2012 isn’t the end of the world, just the end of a significant time period for the Mayan people. December 12, 2012, marks the end of the 13th Baktun (a time period of 394 years) and 13 is a significant number for the Mayan people. So basically 2012 is like the Mayan version of Y2K, except that it’s a little more important, has an interesting astronomical phenomenon happening during that time period (the Earth lines up with the center of the Milky Way galaxy on the winter solstice), and has inspired a bad-looking Roland Emmerich disaster movie.
