Today, two people at my workplace are going to retire. They’re thrilled about it, but not everyone accepts life after work quite so easily. When the church council over the Saint Joseph congregation of nuns on the French Riviera decided it was time for three elderly nuns to move from the rigors of teaching and into a retirement home, the trio of nuns made plans. Now you’ve got nuns on the run, literally, as the sisters fled the convent to avoid retirement!
They’re like an 80-something version of the A Team, except with habits and rulers instead of machine guns and cigars. Sister Marie-Daniel, 86, and Sister Saint-Denis, 82, managed to get away from the convent. The third conspirator, 89-year-old Sister Maurice-Marie, broke her leg four days before the escape was supposed to go down. The nuns were annoyed at being put out to pasture after 60 years of service to the convent school (as well as being uprooted from the freaking French Riviera and moved 250 miles north).
I can’t say I blame them! I wouldn’t want to be moved from my beautiful French convent in my 80’s. I hate packing now; I can’t imagine how much I’d hate cleaning out my Virgin Mary dresser in my dotage!
