Death be not proud? More like, “Death, be not a bummer, dude.” Funerals aren’t very fun, especially for the guest of honor and his family and friends. However, funerals don’t have to be all grim and sadness. if a Singaporean non-profit group has its way, funerals will become fun! The Lien Foundation has pumped money into a company called Happy Coffins, which makes fun and funky coffins emphasizing the individuality and (hopefully) good life of the corpse of honor.
“The traditional negative associations surrounding the coffin were transformed to a celebratory symbol of courage, life and beauty,” foundation spokeswoman Genevieve Kuek said in an e-mail to AOL News. “I’m sure people have differing views about the desirability of Happy Coffins. Death is a radioactive topic which most people avoid like a plague. As such, we want to lighten the atmosphere, disarm and motivate people to think about their life before death differently.”
The coffins feature unusual motifs, like a pair of faded blue jeans with a beer bottle in the pocket or an embroidery, while most of them feature slogans like, “Don’t cry, I had a good life,” “Hello coffin. You seem nice,” and “Say hello to my wonderland.” The group’s website, Life Before Death (warning, sound), even gives visitors the option to make their funeral music playlist. I can only guess at the number of playlists that prominently feature the song “Freebird.”
