The 33 miners trapped in a collapsed mine in Chile, who have been surviving on video games and rations since they were buried alive nearly three months ago are about to see their torment come to an end. The tunnel has been completed, the rescue apparatus is nearly in place, and the tunnel is being reinforced to get them out as we speak. For the trapped men, the ordeal could be over by Friday. There’s just one problem: the trapped miners are fighting over who gets to leave last.
“I would like to illustrate what they are going through today with a conversation we had yesterday,” said Chilean Health Minister Jaime Manalich. “I questioned them and mentioned we were working on an order in which they would be brought out. I said the order would be determined by technical factors. And what was their reaction? ‘Mr Minister, that’s fine but I want to go last please.’ And then another guy said, ‘No, my friend, I said that I was going to be the last one up.’ ‘No, no, really — I want to go last, please,’ another guy started saying.”
It’s amazing. The cooperation and spirit they showed in their initial trapped phase has continued, even to this day. I guess you’d have to be that sort of person to make it down there that long, but it’s wonderful to see that soon, these guys will get to taste fresh air and hug their loved ones once again.
