Nosey Neighbors Can Save Your Life

Posted 1/14/2008 11:58 am by Adams Briscoe

marine-lauterbach.jpg Possibly, one of the most horrific feelings that a parent can face is the possibility of their child being kidnapped, snatched or killed. There aren’t adequate words or thoughts to articulate what that parent must feel like when they receive the awful news. So is likely the case with the family of Cpl. Maria Lauterbach who was killed December 15, four days after she was reported missing. Although she was a 20 year old adult, there is still a parental feeling of wanting to protect and steer children away from potential evil. But how can we always protect them?

The major suspect in the investigation of her murder is Marine Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean. The investigation into this case shows that Lauterbach had accused Larean of raping her sometime last year and had also reported instances of harassment. Was that not enough to get even military authorities involved and snooping around?

We always think and say that if “this” had happened or if “that” had happened then maybe things like this could have been avoided. A lot could have been done in this situation to avoid this horrible consequence:

1. Cpl. Lauterbach’s superiors should have been notified immediately when conflicts arose concerning Laurean. Then, followed up on. Then, followed up on again.

2. Lauterbach should have perhaps kept a diary or journal outlining instances where there was harassment. Tell a friend, too. Tell a co-worker. Tell the Starbuck’s girl. Tell somebody.

3. Get involved. People don’t want to risk seeming “nosey” when there is questionable activity going on around them. They think it’s not their business and so they don’t take action. Bad idea. Do it anyway.

It’s unfortunate, terribly unfortunate that this family has to deal with this tragedy. Hopefully, her killer will be brought to justice and some wrongs righted, if that’s possible. I think we should become nosier and nosier until we get on each others nerves. Maybe it will save someone’s life if we do.

There’s a condition unique to the human condition called default bias.  Generally, when presented with two options, the default option and a different option, most people choose the default.  Even when it’s wrong, this dithering tends to go to the default choice.  That’s why people stare blankly at hundreds of channels, then just stay with […]

Posted 3/17/2010 7:00 am by Ron Hogan

Farmer Ken Jones knew something was wrong when his pregnant ewe, Daisy, kept getting bigger and bigger.  He assumed, reasonably, that she was carrying twins, or maybe even triplets.  While she was carrying three times the baby, it wasn’t multiples.  Instead, Daisy gave birth to a single lamb that was three times the size of […]

Saints preserve us!  Thanks to a fairly strong winter by Irish standards, as well as some changes to traditional farming methods that have endangered its natural habitat, the actual shamrock (Trifolium dubium or lesser trefoil) used to mark St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland is facing a severe shortage.  That’s right; to get their shamrocks the […]
