Living in an area of the country that is prone to tornadoes and has the potential for a huge seismic event thanks to a giant fault line running under the earth’s surface, you sometimes ponder the potential for disaster.
You make a preparedness plan in order to be ready for some unpredictable moment in time when nature’s forces disrupt the daily flow.
Flashlights – check
Batteries – check
Bottled water – check
Canned goods – check
First-aid kit – check
You get the picture.
But how prepared am I if the earth was invaded from outer space?
I’m guessing I’m not ready at all. Be it pod people replicating and replacing my loved ones and co-workers or just laser-blasting, swooping saucer-shaped ships zooming through the air space above my neighborhood, I don’t really have the equipment on hand to defend myself.
It probably would be just a matter of a day or two before I’m enslaved by the invading horde or just plain dead.
It appears I’m not the only one pondering such a cataclysmic event.
Author Daniel Wilson has some theories on how humans can defend their planet. According to him, our main weapon may just be that annoying bug buzzing around your head or the roach lurking under in the dark. He believes with some robotic fittings, insects could be wired to be the heroes of the future.
Think about that before you grab the flyswatter the next time.
