With this Eliot Spitzer “Client-9” scandal raging, now seems like the perfect time to reminisce about all the other sexually-charged (so many puns intended) political scandals that have swept our great nation over the last few decades.
Online general interest magazine Slatehas put together a wondrous interactive map of our nation’s capital called “The Map of Shame: A Guided Tour of Washington’s Sex-Scandal Locales.”
Journey with us as we explore the Mayflower Hotel, where Governor Spitzer paid a prostitute named Kristen to do things that “you might not think were safe”–at least not according to one as-yet-unnamed FBI witness.
A mere hop, skip and a jump will take us to the site of the greatest of all government sex scandals: the White House. Former President Bill Clinton, a blue dress and his now entirely public affair with Monica Lewinsky can be remembered here outside of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (yeah, that’s the President’s address).
We then travel to the 2600 block of Adams Mill Road in Northwest where we remember each and every time Gary Condit denied ever having had an affair with his intern, Chandra Levy.
Slate’s tour doesn’t end there. The map will take you to all the corners of the city, from the Northeast section where Ted Kennedy got up close and personal with some waitresses at La Braisserie to Southeast’s 6th Street where Gary Hart’s chances of becoming president were slain when proof of his extramarital activities came to light.
This map is by far the most titillating experience I have ever had with geography. To do some exploring of your own, head over to Slate now.
