In Crossville, Tennessee, the Flying Spaghetti Monster was recently displayed in front of the local courthouse much to the horror, and delight, of residents.
According to the creator, who created a blog to chronicle the communities reaction to the FSM on the lawn which also hosts a number of other religious and American icons, was in response to the first amendment. The exercise in the rural community has raised eyebrows, and awareness, regarding the freedom of religion. In a recent poll in the county where “it’s noodley appendage” can be seen by anyone going into the county seat, many residents of the community cite they would rather not have any statues, religious or otherwise, on the lawn by a whopping 79 percent.
The Flying Spaghetti Monster will remain on the lawn until May 1. Over the next month, Ariel Safdie, who created the statue with a few “Pastafarians” and is blogging local reaction, cites that she wishes that it continues an open dialogue and that it “provokes thought” about intelligent design.
