Cultures are different all over the world. This goes without saying. In Seoul, South Korea, there is a movement underway to reclassify dogs into a new classification and has met not only local, but international, outrage from animal lovers.
Seoul is wanting to classify dogs into a livestock category.
Apparently in Seoul, locals love the taste of dog but the animal was banned during the 1988 Olympics as “abhorrent.” The locals don’t care and the practice of eating man’s best friend is apparently a delicacy. More than 500 restaurants in the country’s capitol serve canine with intricate dishes and it is estimated that two to four million dogs are killed a year for consumption.
The issue comes down to that although dogs are banned, people are eating them anyway. Local officials want to be able to slaughter dogs in a more sanitary way with government regulations.
The new measure has animal rights’ activists taking to the streets and launched dozens of on-line petitions citing that not only is it cruel but it will further halt efforts in “globilization” by putting ground dog next to other meat such as pork and beef.
Seoul says the reality is that people like dog and will pursue the measure.
Lassie and Rin Tin Tin are obviously against the possibility of their South Korean canine brothers and sisters being eaten.
