Before we get into today’s breaking news, you must understand something about horror fans. We are a ruthless lot. Whether we are traditionalist, slasher fans, monster-based or in the vein of, let’s say, Alfred Hitchcock in wanting suspense amongst real-life possibilities, the one thing we do want collectively is quality. Sometimes in horror/fantasy movies, quality is hard to come by, believe me. Just ask my co-writer, Ron Hogan, who posts quite a bit here at PopFi about the technicalities and joy of the horror genre.
So the news this morning that Uwe Boll will quit making movies, especially those based on video games, if a particular online petition reaches a million signatures is good news indeed. Boll has done some wonderful classics (snark) such as Bloodrayne, Seed, and In the Name of the King, A Dungeon Seige Story. Boll told Fear Net that he might entertain the idea of quitting cinema if the petition reaches a million John Hancocks. The petition as of PopFi press time has 18,000 thus far.
Boll has never backed down from his critics. He’s also had trouble making decent movies. The one thing horror aficionados will forgive is “good” bad movies with a good level of camp. All gamers want is the truest representation of their games translated to film.
Boll doesn’t bother me as much as he does other people. I have to stay if a director is going to make such a commitment to trash, then bully for him for having the courage to do it. It will be interesting to see how many signatures the petition gets.
