Every day another little piece of what used to be science fiction becomes science fact. The things we take for granted in 2008 would have been mystifying in 1946, when Dick Tracy first spoke into his wrist communicator. Nowadays, not only do we take instant mobile communication for granted, most of us find it annoying to be in constant contact with others. Then again, Dick Tracy never sat next to us in a restaurant talking about gross foot fungus, or worse, sat next to us in the bathroom engaged in both conversation and evacuation.
As the late Arthur C. Clarke once said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” I don’t think we’re at the magic level yet, but things improve every day and we get closer and closer to the one piece of technology EVERYONE wants more than anything else: the flying car. It’s time for science to stop improving the wheeled vehicles we have now and get us airborne!
