Maybe Dr. Robert Neville should have done a little reading before trying to take on the zombies of New York City in I Am Legend (2007).
Had he read io9 staff writer Lisa Katayama’s new book Urawaza: Secret Everyday Tips and Tricks From Japan, he would have known that there is a simple solution to being slower than the zombies one must run away from. And only requires two rubber bands. This can help you, too, Police Sergeant Kenneth Hall from Dawn of the Dead (2004).
Katayama explains that by wrapping a rubber band around your ankle and big toe in a figure eight, you can cause your foot to expand and contract in such a way that it will strengthen your push-off from the ground. This will propel you further, thus making your speed slightly faster than normal.
Katayama’s book contains other helpful bits of knowledge and tricks that the Japanese have uncovered. She promises the book will increase your appreciate of the Japanese culture while fine-tuning your survival skills and perhaps make you superhuman. It’s kind of hard to pass up those kinds of incentives to buy something.
