Rosh Hashanah begins tonight. For those of you that don’t know, Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. It begins tonight, September 29, at sundown and runs until sunset on October first on the US calendar, and it marks the beginning of year 5769 of the Jewish Calendar. Shana Tovah!
Rosh Hashanah, like all the High Holidays, is marked by religious ceremonies. There are special prayers and poems, the blowing of the shofar, and of course the one thing every holiday needs… feasting! Black-eyed peas, apples, honey, pomegranates, leeks, spinach, gefilte fish, and delicious challah are the traditional foods of choice, and new fruits are a big part of the celebration’s second night.
It’s funny; no matter what your culture or religious back ground, the one thing everyone can agree on is a good feast. No matter what the reason to celebrate, there’s nothing better than to sit down to a nice big meal. If it’s special food, so much the better! Every holiday deserves a nice feast.
