Actor House Peters, Jr., better known to a generation as the inspiration for the bald-headed, muscular advertising icon Mr. Clean, passed away Wednesday at the Motion Picture and Television Fund Hospital at the age of 92. Peters, the son of silent movie actor House Peters, found fame as Mr. Clean but kept busy in Hollywood from 1935 until 1967, usually playing the heavy alongside actors like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. He was awarded the Golden Boot Award in 2000 for his contributions to the cowboy genre.
It’s funny in a way, but I never knew there was an inspiration for the cartoon form of Mr. Clean. I knew him best as the Sherriff from reruns of Lassie. You can’t argue with the fact that Mr. Clean made him more famous than anything else he’d done, and it provided a rare break from the heavy roles that he was usually cast in. Yes, he was still kind of intimidating, but only towards grime. I wonder who the third of the three famous deaths will be.
