You think you’d hear this story in the summer, but instead it happened in one of the cooler parts of the year. In Hayward, Wisconsin, a 125-pound black bear surprised customers at a Marketplace Foods grocery story by coming in to chill out. The bear wandered through the automatic doors, went straight to the liquor department, and found himself a comfortable perch, 12 feet off the ground, inside the beer cooler! He lingered for an hour before state wildlife officials tranquilized him and took him back to nature.
The bear didn’t drink any beer and didn’t bother anyone, which kind of makes me wonder why he decided to wander into the store in the first place. If he wasn’t hungry or thirsty, then why did he go into a place chock full of humans? Bears do some pretty strange things, but that seems strange even for them. I imagine it’s a lot nicer than a cave or hollow tree or wherever else a bear might hibernate for the winter, but it still seems awful inconvenient to sleep on a stack of Heineken. One wrong move and you’ve got a serious mess!
