Police can charge you under just about any circumstance, but can you be arrested for NOT using microblogging service Twitter? Well, if you’re James A. Roppo, an executive at Island Def Jam Records, your inaction is a crime. Police say Roppo’s failure to post a Twitter message lead to a riot.
You see, at a record signing for Justin Bieber (who I have never heard of), the crowd was getting unruly. Too many teenage girls for the Roosevelt Field mall to handle, I guess. Fearing a riot, cops cancelled the event, ushered Bieber away, and told Roppo and his people to tweet the cancellation to get the crowd to disperse. When Roppo failed to do so in a timely fashion, cops ran him in on a litany of ominous charges: family assault, endangering the welfare of a child, obstruction of governmental administration, reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance.
I guess the fact that someone from the Bieber camp tweeted isn’t enough. I think the Garden City, New York police are just looking for someone to blame, given how bad it makes them look to be unable to control a crowd of 3,000 underage girls. You guys have tear gas for a reason!
