As a twice-divorced friend of mine says, “You’re not paying for the time you were married, you’re paying them to go away.” These days, divorce is just another fact of life, as more than half of all marriages will end in a split. You might break up over a nickname, and you might make a public spectacle of yourself in the process, but the actual process of the elimination of the marriage can get tricky. That’s what’s lead to some of the more unusual and bizarre divorce proceedings over the years.
My parents have been married for a long, long time. They got married fresh out of high school and 36 years later, they’re still together. That’s a pretty staggering thought for me, since I grew up watching other peoples’ parents get split up, and have since watched those children of divorce go through divorces. None of those divorces involved transplanted organs or Nobel Prize money, but they still couldn’t have been fun.
