When Connecting Derby was launched, one of the £36.2 million pound project’s many goals was to revamp Derby, England’s roadways. This included two new stretches of an inner ring road within Derby. With every new roadway comes the chance to honor a notable local citizen. Among the 100 suggestions was the name Lara Croft. Now, Lara Croft isn’t a real person; she’s a top-heavy treasure hunter/archaeologist and star of the Tomb Raider series of video games, novels, and movies. She’s also made the short list of potential new names for Derby’s newest stretch of road.
I know that, to some people, the idea of Lara Croft Road makes about as much sense as Sonic The Hedgehog Lane or Super Mario Drive, but it makes sense. After all, Lara Croft was thought up by Toby Gard, then an employee of Core Design. Core Design was a video game and software design company headquartered in Derby. That means Lara was born in Derby, and is without a doubt its most famous daughter. So, head on over to Derby’s official website and vote Lara!
