On the cusp of the end of the 2000s and the beginning of the 2010s, there’s two ways we can look. Everyone will be looking back over the past 10 years, but let’s be different. Let’s look towards the future, and some social media predictions for 2010. Well, we can look back at the past, or we can look to the future.
“The future, Ron-an?”
That’s right, made-up voice of Andy Richter. The future of social media, and all the trends therein. After all, don’t you want to be one of the first to identify the hot new trend, rather than be like that crazy aunt who discovers Facebook 4 years after it stopped being cool, yet insists on spending all her time on it and spamming you and your page with invitations to games, quiz invites, and other annoying spam? Right, exactly.
The future of social media is increased social media adoption, for one, by the billions of Indians and Chinese just now jumping into the online fray. With that will come increased attacks on Web 2.0 targets like Twitter and Facebook. There’ll be more people using it, but there’ll also be increased audience fragmentation, leading to the growth of specific subcultural social networks. There’ll be a huge increase in people using things like ebook readers and getting newspapers and magazines via downloaded subscriptions and applications, which means a general increase in corporate presence in your online life.
Basically, it’s going to be the last 10 years or so of internet use magnified a hundredfold.
