I love the weird, random errata Google Doodles honor on a day to day basis. You never know what to expect, because you never know what sort of thing they’re going to point out. From bar codes to Halloween, Google never ceases to honor the interesting and strange. Today’s Goodle Doodle honors the late, great E.C. Segar, the creator of Popeye the Sailor! E. C., born Elzie Crisler Segar, would have been 115 today.
Of the hundreds of cartoon character I grew up with, Popeye was always my favorite of the classic cartoon characters. Why? I’m not sure why. I guess because he took a beating, but all it took was a little spinach and he was back in the fight, pulverizing Nazis or saving Sweetpea from pirates or whatever else Popeye did in those old Max Fleischer cartoons.
Here’s one of my favorite Popeye cartoons. Now that they’re public domain, expect to see them everywhere. Olive Oyl was never good enough for Popeye in my opinion. He wasn’t much to look at, but at least he’s loyal!
