Erik Estavillo has a problem, and he’s recruited celebrities Winona Ryder and Martin L. Gore of Depeche Mode to help him. You see, Erik is suing Activision, the parent company of Blizzard AKA the World of Warcraft people. You see, Erik blames his many health problems on WoW, including: Crohn’s disease, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, agoraphobia, and panic disorder. He says Blizzard caused his many diseases because their game is designed to take too long. (Tell that to the guy who finished World of Warcraft and now has nothing to do.)
Estavillo is trying to subpoena Winona Ryder because the former darling of the acting world is a big fan of The Catcher in the Rye. That makes her the perfect person to “explain the signifcance of alienation in [the novel] and. . . how alienation in [it] can tie to alienation in real life [in] video games such as World of Warcraft.” As for Martin L. Gore, listen to any Depeche Mode song and tell me he’s not an expert on feeling “sad, lonely and alienated, as can be seen in the songs he writes.”
Obviously, this is a guy with a lot of problems. I mean, aside from his listed health issues. Given his history as a serial video game company lawsuit plaintiff, I imagine this case will get thrown out even before ActiBlizzard’s lawyers get into battle.
