For over 50 years, the Poe Toaster has made an appearance. From January 19, 1949 until January 19, 2009, a mystery man has gone to Edgar Allan Poe’s original grave in Baltimore and left a tribute of cognac and roses, along with the occasional note. However, this year was the first time that no one showed up at the Edgar Allan Poe House Museum to pay tribute to the man in the traditional way, breaking one of the literary world’s longest (and dare I say sweetest) traditions.
Jeff Jerome, curator of the Edgar Allan Poe House in Baltimore, says that among the possibilities for the Poe Toaster’s disappearance are the flu, car trouble, and even and end of the tradition. Last year was Poe’s bicentennial, so if there’s a good time to end the tradition, that’d be it. He’ll be back at the Poe House for his yearly all-nighter next year in the hopes that this year’s missing tribute to one of history’s most famous authors was just an abberation.
