One of the first stories I wrote for PopFi way back when was a story about a Russian man who was so drunk that he didn’t feel it when he got stabbed in the back. I made a comment about never going to drink in Russia. However, it’s not just the alcoholic Russians who are stab-resistant. Julia Popova, a 22-year-old, was walking home from work when someone tried to snatch her purse. She couldn’t fight the man off, so after losing her handbag she just went home, where her horrified parents discovered a six-inch knife buried just centimeters from her spine.
Hospital staff attribute Julia’s amazing feat of pain resistance to simple shock. After such a horrifying injury, the body simply reroutes the nervous system to avoid feeling that sort of pain in an attempt to continue functioning. Still, I can only imagine trying to take down a Russian is like trying to take down a grizzly bear, but harder!
