Dubai is one of the most forward-thinking countries in the whole of the UAE, but one of its biggest food trends right now is derived from ancient sources. In the Middle East, there’s not much grass or water for proper cattle, so beef isn’t terribly available. However, camels are everywhere. The restaurant chain Local House is the first to take the ancient camel and grind it up in a modern style, creating the camel burger.
Camel meat is tougher than beef, but it’s also said to be lower in fat and cholesterol, too. For about $5.45, you get a quarter-pound camel burger with cheese and burger sauce (whatever that is). Owners of Local House are planning on expanding, looking into prime real estate located within the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.
Apparently the camel burger, fries, and camel milk shake combo is a huge hit with tourists. I wish that last sentence was a joke, but it’s not. I’m getting kind of queasy just thinking about it.
