Just think about it. You see someone in all black wearing a black helmet, struggling on the ice? You’d think it was someone in trouble and summon the authorities. As it turns out, three people who did this in Greenville, Maine, were actually summoning authorities to rescue an otter eating dinner rather than a drowning snowmobile driver. Officials flew over Moosehead Lake, studying for any signs of drowning men in stylish outfits, and all they found were a few little blood stains and some crawfish, which are tell-tale signs that an otter has been eating nearby.
I imagine this kind of thing happens all the time. In the water, you can mistake anything, like calling a manatee a monster, so it’s only natural that a little flailing black lump in the distance becomes a drowning snowmobile driver rather than just a hungry little otter munching on some crawdads. The important thing is that no one actually drowned.
