There was a lot more than national pride and Olympic gold on the line last night during the gold medal game between the men’s hockey teams of Canada and United States. There was also the now-standard bet between politicians. At stake was a case of beer. If the US won, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper owed Barack Obama a case of Molson; if Canada won, US President Obama owed Harper a case of Yuengling beer. Time to pay up, Obama: Canada took the gold medal in overtime last night, topping the US 3-2.
I thought it was odd that Harper would send some mass-market beer like Molson, while Obama sent a lesser-known regional beer, but as it turns out Yuengling is the oldest brewery in the United States and is on the National Register of Historic Places! I had no idea it was such a historically-important beer. The things you learn in this blogging business, eh?
