In an ongoing war against uselessness and in an attempt to make the most of their back content, Popular Science magazine is going online. Not just the recent issues, and not just some special blog version, but 137 years of Popular Science magazine is going online for free thanks to a partnership with Google. Just head to their archives, type in a key word to search for, and let the engine do the exploring!
As someone who has thousands of magazines littering his basement in boxes and crates and on bookshelves, I love this kind of thing. Now, I’m kind of a pack rat anyway when it comes to publications, but I’m horrible when it comes to indexing these things. Once I archive a magazine, it’s pretty much gone forever. At least now, no matter what happens to PopSci, their archives will live on forever. Look at what happened to Gourmet Magazine, the Weekly World News, and Cracked; the magazines closed or stumbled, but the websites live on.
