It was a night of high drama, high comedy, upsets, surprises, and confusion. All in all, it was a microcosm of Hollywood. In a nutshell, the 2010 Oscars were basically like any other huge awards show, except this one matters more than any other because once you win an Oscar, you’re set for life. You know you’ve done well, that you’re one of the most respected people in the industry, and that you’ve joined an exclusive club. Here’s the complete list of 2010 Oscar winners.
There were a lot of surprising wins last night, but most of them involved Kathryn Bigelow picking up Best Director and Best Picture Oscars for The Hurt Locker. I’m sure it’s a great movie (I haven’t seen it), but given just how big Avatar was in budget and result, and how it won so many Golden Globes, I figured for sure it’d take the Oscar. Then again, as a friend of mine said last night, “Avatar won a Best Picture Oscar 15 years ago when it was called Dances With Wolves.”
All in all, it was a good night. A lot of people got Oscars they’ve deserved for a long time, and a lot of people got Oscars they deserved for great current performances. The show was still about an hour too long and had really bad pacing, but that’d be quibbling. Since Jeff Bridges got his Oscar, I can’t complain.
