Since Cyprus gained independence in 1960, a central figure of the country was Thassos Papadopoulos. He was one of the central figures in the revolutionary movement to gain freedom. At 26, he was the youngest cabinet minister to serve in the post-colonial government. Until his death in December 2008, he was one of the leading figures in Cyprus. Even after his death, he remained a crucial figure in Cyprian politics, which is why his corpse was kidnapped and held for ransom.
There’s only one problem with that. The family never received a ransom notice. Some people believe the theft was politically motivated, as the Greek and Turkish Cypriots continue to struggle to hammer out some sort of agreement about the country’s freedom. As mysteriously as the corpse disappeared, it recently reappeared in a cemetery on the outskirts of Nicosia, hidden in another person’s grave.
