It was a national championship that could be best summed up as your choice of powerhouse versus underdog, tradition versus upstart, major versus mid-major, or evil versus good. Unfortunately, life isn’t like the movies, and in this case, evil actually did triumph over good. Coach Mike Krzyzewski‘s Duke Blue Devils needed a couple of last-second escapes to do it, but they managed to top the plucky upstart coach Brad Stevens and the Butler Bulldogs 61-59 in last night’s NCAA Tournament finals. That gives Coach K his first national title since 2001 and fourth overall.
In case you can’t tell, I loathe Duke. I could not be less of a Duke fan. To me, they’re pretty much the worst program ever, run by the most overrated coach and featuring the most overrated, privileged players you could imagine. I could not have been rooting harder for Butler to win. Still, despite the ending, that was a really good national title game and an almost-fitting end to March Madness.
Here’s hoping next year Butler brings home a victory for underdogs everywhere. I hate you so much, Duke University basketball program. Seriously.
