In the wake of the controversy about lip-synching during the opening of the Beijing Olympics, when Chinese officials replaced a good-singing ugly girl with an adorable non-singing girl for propaganda purposes, China went on an aggressive anti-pantomime assault, passing a host of laws aimed at banning lip-synching and other fake singing. Now, we’ve got our first fines being doled out. Fang Ziyuan and Yin Youcan, two Chinese singers, were smacked with a $7,000 fine for pretending to sing!
At a concert in Chengdu, China, the two were accused of lip-synching. The two tried to defend themselves against the accusation by claiming to be dancers, but the official Chinese television station showed video of the two clearly fake-singing to a backup track at the Huang Shengyi Solo Concert. They’re the first to get officially charged and fined under the act, but the threat has successfully prevented Britney Spears from adopting any Chinese children, so it’s been successful thus far!
