Talk about gross. A new creature has been discovered that is the perfect storm of horrible, gross, and generally terribly disgusting things. It’s a leech (strike one for grossness) that lives inside your nose (strike two) and has 8 giant teeth (strike three, time to pass out). There’s only one name you could possibly give a leech with giant teeth: the T. rex of leeches. Literally, the new species is called Tyrannobdella rex, or “tyrant leech king.” Its teeth are five times as large as those of other leeches, and it has one jaw (something no other leech has) that it uses like a saw to gain access to human blood!
The new species was discovered three years ago in the nose of a 9-year-old girl in Peru by physician Renzo Arauco-Brown. The girl routinely bathed in the waters of the Amazon. A look back at other cases in the past uncovered several more incidents, dating from 1997. Researchers believe there may be as many as 10,000 species of leeches just waiting to be discovered.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go huddle up in a corner and whimper in terror for awhile.
