Frustrated with the lack of movement and beset on all sides by cancellations and closures due to citizens stranded abroad, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has finally had enough of the delaying and lethargy that has beset Europe since air travel was closed in the wake of the Iceland volcano disaster, and he’s going to do something about it. The crown jewel of the British Empire, the Royal Navy, is getting put into action to rescue stranded Britons from Europe. Brown ordered three ships to get into action and get across the English Channel to pick up stranded passengers.
Two ships, the HSM Ocean and HMS Ark Royal, are getting sent across the Channel to France. A third ship is getting sent to Spain to pick up a unit of soldiers coming back from Afghanistan. The British government is currently negotiating with Spain to try and get more of its tourists flown to Spain to make the boat trip back. While airports have mostly been closed, there have been limited windows for flights in and out.
