The creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are no strangers to being threatened by Muslim extremists. After all, in 2006, the show was at the center of a firestorm surrounding a supposed depiction of the Muslim prophet Muhammad, who Muslims are not allowed to depict in religious artwork. They believe it is blasphemy to do so. Now, South Park is at it again, depicting a guy in a bear suit (that is supposed to be Muhammad) in an attempt to make fun of their own controversial history. Of course, the average terrorist isn’t going to get the joke, and predictably, Muslims are outraged again.
“We have to warn Matt and Trey that what they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh for airing this show,” warned a posting written by Abu Talhah Al-Amrikee on the website Revolution Muslim. “This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them.”
Of course, show creators Parker and Stone has a different take, expressed in an interview about the show’s 200th episode on Boing Boing. “We’d be so hypocritical against our own message, our own thoughts, if we said, ‘okay, well let’s not make fun of them because they won’t hurt us,'” said Parker. “It matters to me when we talk about Muhammad that I can say we did this… and I can stand behind that,” Stone added. “I don’t think it’s going to change the world, but this is how it’s got to be for our show.”
The controversy is a dumb one for several reasons. First of all, Parker and Stone aren’t Muslims and aren’t bound by the laws of Islam, so they’re free to show Muhammad. Secondly, Muhammad was featured on South Park in 2001 in an entire episode and nobody complained then. Third, knowing Parker and Stone, the guy in the bear suit probably isn’t even Muhammad, just a goof on everyone. It’s the most obvious set-up ever.
