Brian Burian (which I read as Brian Brian, but that’s probably not the case) is pretty brazen. He made all his thefts in broad daylight, in plain sight of the world. Then again, when you’re stealing fire hydrants, which weigh 80-100 pounds, you probably need all the light you can get. Burian, from Rubidoux, California, stole 45 fire hydrants throughout San Bernadino and Riverside Counties by posing as a city employee.
All you need to look like a city employee is a yellow caution vest and a white utility truck, apparently. That allowed Burian to shut off the water and abscond with the hydrants. He’d then cut up the metal fire plugs and sell them for scrap metal at $1.60 per pound. The hydrants cost the city $1800 a piece to replace.
Sounds to me like this guy should’ve taken the hydrants and sold them back to the city as a hydrant dealer rather than scrapping them! It would’ve been more lucrative, definitely. Then again, how do you explain away used fire hydrants?
