In a post earlier, I talked about the guy that’s eaten 1,500 light bulbs. Now, I get to talk about his polar opposite. Prahlad Jani is not a man who eats broken glass; he’s a man who doesn’t eat at all. He claims that a goddess sustains him by pouring an elixir through a hole in his palate and that he has not eaten or had a drink in 70 years. Now, his unique survival skills are being put to the test, as India’s Defense Research Development Organization has put the sadhu, or wandering holy man, into an isolation wing at a hospital in Ahmedabad, Gurjarat.
The defense researchers hope that Jani’s unique “breatharian” lifestyle might actually offer useful tips for people stranded in dangerous situations, like people trapped by disasters and soldiers in dangerous situations. Six days in, and Jani seems to be going strong, having not eaten or gone to the bathroom the entire time. It is common for Hindus and Jains to fast for up to 8 days during religious ceremonies; doctors plan to observe Jani for 15 days to see just how accurate his claims are.
