If you thought the United States Congress was bad when it came to partisan debate and general uncooperativeness between parties, then you know nothing about politics. During a debate in parliment, things got a little out of hand in Ukraine. Eggs got a little out of hand, as a debate on extending the Russian Navy’s lease on the port of Sevastopol ended with Parlimentary Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn getting eggs thrown at him by opponents of the measure. Things then proceeded to get worse, as after the egg-tossing, the session dissolved into fisticuffs!
The fracas left the Parlimentary building greatly damaged, with voting mechanisms vandalized. Several deputies also went to the hospital for treatment after getting involved in the fights. While the physical damage is bad, Lytvyn is quoted as saying, “the moral and political damage cannot be compensated for.” In a way, he’s got a point, as Ukraine is now kind of a laughing stock thanks to a food fight in Parliment; however, by extending the port agreement Ukraine did score a 30 percent discount on Russian natural gas, so at least he saved a little cash for his country.
