You’re supposed to put de lime in de coconut and shake it all up, not put de coconut oil in de truck and spill it all over the road. However, that’s what happened in southern Sacramento, California overnight. Police say about 1:30 AM, a semi-trailer carrying 7,000 gallons of coconut oil overturned on Florin Perkins Road, turning an otherwise normal street into a trip into Harry Belafonte’s Caribbean nightmare.
It took almost 5 hours for haz-mat crews to clean up the spilled coconut oil, and police say they’re still sopping up oil with piles of sand (and cleaning up the piles of sand left behind in storm drains due to the cleaning up process). The driver, who refused treatment of his minor injuries at the scene, says he fell asleep at the wheel, which could be logical since he was driving his load of lubricating oil to a Proctor & Gamble plant in the middle of the night. Police are still investigating.
I’m not a fan of coconuts, in terms of their taste. However, I do like their smell. I bet Florin Perkins Road smells great right about now, don’t you?
