I hate it when lettuce gets recalled. I’m not a vegetarian since I love the flavor of death, but I do eat a salad pretty much every day. It was an important component of my weight loss regimen back in my dieting days, and is even more important for general good health. Except, of course, when the lettuce is contaminated with e.Coli and has to be recalled. You’ll lose weight with e.Coli, too; you just might not live through it.
Freshway Foods, a leading supplier of salad fixins for restaurants and grocery stores through their brands Freshway and Imperial Sysco, has recalled romaine lettuce in 24 states: Alabama, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The recall covers the in-house salad bars at grocery chains Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markets, and Marsh.
On the plus side, Freshway doesn’t make bagged salads for consumers, so if you’re going to have been infected, it’s already happened by now since it’s salad you buy in-store and then eat. However, if you have any take-home greens, it’s best to just throw them away.
