Mihai Albu has been on the cutting edge of footwear design for the better part of 20 years. He’s got a love affair with women’s shoes, and now the Romanian man known as the shoe architect has come out with his latest masterpiece. The so-called skyscraper heel just might Albu’s crowning glory, as it is one of the tallest heels I’ve ever seen on a shoe. We’re talking foot-tall shoes with 12-inch heels!
They call Mr. Albu an architect, and with good reason. Not only do you need extra clearance to wear his shoes, he got his start as an architect designing buildings, and he finds most of his inspiration in the work of fellow architects and sculptors, rather than his fellow fashion designers. “I am creating a constructed chaos,”he says of his designs, which combine French leather with mirrors, jewels, feathers, and significant doses of artistic inspiration (including a design made of glass like a vase with flowers inside, and a three-heeled shoe, among other designs).
If you’ve ever wanted to be tall… I mean, giant tall… you now know where to go shopping. Albu’s shoes make normal high heels look like flats, and flats look like standing in a hole in the ground!
