It was the last thing that 63 inmates at Miami-Dade County’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center expected. It might have even been the last thing some of them wanted; however, the good deed got done and the women got a reminder of just what they are, and what they’re missing, as the prisoners were given free Mother’s Day flowers on Sunday.
The event was the brain child of Miami florist Bill Armellini, himself a father. “I’m not a complicated guy,” Armellini said. “I just think help or charity should be given where it’s needed most.” Prison staff have no delusions about what Armellini’s gift can accomplish, but there’s still hope for the 63 women, all of whom were touched by the reminder of life outside of the gray concrete walls of the prison. If it changes one mother’s life for the better, then it was all worth it.
