It started out as a joke, but as it turns out the Facebook-guided push to have Betty White host Saturday Night Live was a great idea. Betty’s appearance was a ratings bonanza, and most importantly, the show itself was actually really entertaining, with Betty spending more time in the various skits and segments than I’ve seen hosts half her age do! Now, the esteemed comedienne is back in another viral campaign: Betty White, Oscars host.
I have to say, if she can pull of hosting SNL, she can do the Oscars in her sleep. It’s a lot less physically demanding, she’ll be able to read off the teleprompter most of the night (or a cue card), and she’s a natural, friendly presence who resonates with viewers. Plus, she’s already made the joke about hosting the Oscars in her opening SNL monologue, so she’s set up her own next career move!
If not Betty White, there’s only one person who’d make me tune in to watch the Oscars, and that’s Robert Downey, Jr. Possibly both of them together, splitting hosting duties! Make this happen, Internet!
