NASA’s Voyager space probes have been the most successful space probes in the history of humanity. No other satellites have gone farther into space or remained active as long as those two robot explorers have. However, a month ago, Voyager 2 began to have some problems with its transmissions, sending back garbled data transmissions. Since it’s 8.6 billion miles away from earth, it’s not as if they can reel it back in and fix it manually, so while they work on a software patch for the 33-year-old satellite, they’ve disabled its non-status transmissions. Old software breaks down, as we all know, but to German conspiracy buff Hartwig Hausdorf, it’s obvious Voyager 2 has been hijacked by aliens.
“It seems almost as if someone had reprogrammed or hijacked the probe – thus perhaps we do not yet know the whole truth,” Hausdorf says, no doubt from beneath a tinfoil hat. Then again, if Stephen Hawking is afraid of aliens, maybe Hausdorf’s not just a conspiracy nut. Maybe he’s just blessed with an abundance of caution. I suggest we send a fleet of man-made satellites after Voyager 2, so we can rescue it.
