Hamish Jacobs wants to honor his family heritage. His line came over to North America from Scotland in 1965, and as such, he’s pretty fresh and pretty proud of his family roots. As such, he wants to do the traditional Scottish thing and wear a kilt to his high school graduation. Unfortunately, principal Mark Beazer of Raymond High School says no, and Westwind School Division superintendent Doug Bennett backs his principals. However, Hamish is willing to fight the kilt ban all the way to the school board.
“I want to wear it out of respect for my ancestors, and because it’s just what Scottish people wear to formal things,” Jacobs said. “I find it funny. The school teaches you to respect your heritage, be different, be yourself. And so I am going to be different, being myself. And they don’t like that.”
Of course they don’t like it, Hamish. If you were wearing your dashiki rather than your Highlander garb, you could claim discrimination. Unfortunately, the discrimination argument doesn’t work when a white person uses it, even if it is a Scotsman. Hopefully the school board is loaded with O’Reillys and MacDonalds and sides with your request to wear your Forbes colors in graduation.
There’s a huge difference between a traditional kilt and just wearing a dress. Just look at that guy above; doesn’t he look ready for any formal occasion you can throw at him? Of course he does, he’s a man dressed with style. There’s nothing about this look that doesn’t look good.
