Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga had it. The 21st perfect game in Major League Baseball history, and the third this season, was his. All he had to do was beat Cleveland Indians shortstop Jason Donald to first base, field the ball, and it would be in the record books. Unfortunately for Armando, the guy covering first base was umpire Jim Joyce, who promptly blew the biggest call he’ll ever make in his entire career. Just look at the video and tell me how he could miss that call.
Unfortunately, baseball doesn’t have a legitimate review system for instant replay on tagging runners out. The only person who can do the right thing and correct the mistake (which Joyce feels terrible about) is MLB commissioner Bud Selig, who is quite possibly the most incompetent commissioner of a major sports league not named Gary Bettman. Even the umpire who botched the call has admitted his mistake publicly and begged Galarraga for forgiveness, so here’s hoping Selig steps in, does the right thing, and gives Galarraga the perfect game he deserves.
