The purpose of zoos is to protect the endangered species, and no species is more endangered than the mullet. We’re talking the haircut, not the fish. Once, mullets roamed this great land, reveling in their business in the front, party in the back lifestyle. Then, after the mid-90’s, when Billy Ray Cyrus cut off his iconic mullet and Michael Bolton did the same, the mullet started to disappear. Once ubiquitous, it’s now the sole province of trailer parks, biker rallies, and European hockey and soccer players. That’s why the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium offered reduced admission prices for all mullets AND a free behind-the-scenes tour to the customer with the best mullet on Monday, in an effort to catalogue the species.
That’s not the zoo’s only special promotion. Mullet Day kicked off an entire week of crazy promotions, including $5 admission for folks wearing tye-dye and lower prices for the zoo’s Facebook friends. Between the mullet heads and the old hippies, it’s like a People of Walmart live tour! (Only without all the cross-dressing.)
