The King’s Troop, a ceremonial unit of horse-mounted soldiers who are part of the ceremonial Royal Horse Artillery, are one of the oldest existing units in the British military. However, their new home base in Woolwich, SouthLondon, is one of the most cutting-edge facilities in the whole of the Ministry of Defense, because it embraces alternative fuels. Specificially, the kind of stinky brown alternative fuel found in their horse barns. That’s right, it’s a poo-powered military base!
While the base won’t open until November 2011, it’s already part of the MoD’s bragging book. “We are using the latest energy conservation techniques in our barracks,” said a spokesman for the military, perhaps smirking. After all, burning human waste is one of the oldest and easiest ways to generate energy throughout history, so it’s kind of funny to consider a thousand-year-old fuel as the latest in anything.
